Lanternrouge asked if anyone was doing the
Evans Ride It MTB course on Saturday, so downloaded the forms, told him we'd be there but didn't get a reply, so didn't know who to look out for. Young Cubester decided he'd ride it too, and so we set off on the medium route (billed as 25 miles, but actually 28 on my computer, and two others I asked)
Hats off to Evans. It was well organised, very well signed route, with some good mixed riding. Just one or two really testing sections of narrow path with a rock step climb, and lots of luvverly mud and nettles. £12.50 on the day (tenner pre-booked), accompanied kids free, got you a nice carpark, a free energy gel or bar each, a memory map of the route each and they did all the planning for you. Whoever went round the course and put up all the signs, and even put ribbons in the trees at any ambiguous points along the way need congratulating. Bikewash at the end was a nice touch.
At eleven Cubester showed some grit. He manages the 10 to 20 mile club rides we do on a Thursday, which to be fair are more testing than the Evans route, so I took a chance that he'd be able to manage this one if we took it steady. He showed some signs of flagging after the halfway point, but started to discuss scalping other riders. This seemed to give him the edge, and we calculated that we were passed twice by single guys on expensive looking bikes, and passed well over a dozen other riders. The last mile of the route saw a climb up through the deerpark at Harewood House. It's a long and steep hill. I was thrilled to see Cubester man up and ride the whole climb, cycling past a lot of riders pushing.
We finished in 3.29, which I think was very respectable for an eleven year old.
