I decided to try out a few weeks of base training in a race-

I know I know, I said next month. Anyhow

Held on the first climb and got onto the top of the second, but I was gasping lead pack got away. I was then fighting with myself not to get caught. I held on for 11th in D got a big demotion. Well and truly a D

Pre-race nerves have ‘helped’ me to a weight of 70.9kg this morning. This time last year I was around 73kg, my bike was a kilo heavier and I wasn’t putting out the short-term power I’m managing now. Add in a humongous tailwind, and Monsal could be quite fun this afternoon!

I shaved 7.4s off the time I did last year, 1:36.1 for 35th place.. Last year I did 1:43.5 for 48th.

Joined a ZRS cat race today, wasn't sure what to expect. Thought I might be dropped early and have to solo but held on (just) to the first KoM when the leaders pulled away. Found 2 others over the top, 4 others caught us and we rode quite well together to the second KoM. Not sure if we dropped riders, or some went ahead, but ended up with a smaller group over the top to the finish.
ZP estimated me 17th but I came in 16th so that seems reasonable - in the app I was 21st but as always, the numbers in ZP (24) were different to Zwift App (41 starters, 33 finishers).

My ZRS is unchanged at 261 :training:

Checked out your Strava , on the official Strava segment you were nearly twice as fast as me 🤣 on my one visit when I was just thankful to get up the thing without stopping 😁
Yeah, don't think I'm going to be entering any hill climbs any time soon. On my ride this afternoon, I noticed that a bridge over the eventual HS2 line had finally been opened near Steeple Claydon; that road had been closed for almost 6 months. It wasn't on my original route (as I wasn't aware it had been opened, turns out it was only done yesterday) but I thought I'd give it a go anyway.

After I got back, I checked Strava and sure enough, someone had already created a segment for it and I was thrilled to see I had the trophy for 10th place. Until I looked at the details and found out that only 10 people had done it so far and I was last! I'm now 12th out of 12, so I've got to wait a little longer to find someone slower than me...

I beginning to think the ZRS is more flawed than the old category system.

Look at the first 9 riders 3Wkg or more for the whole race.

I’m no fan of it, much prefer the old cat system. Seems I’m not the only one, only Zwift seem to use ZRS for racing, the leagues still seem to use the old cat system. I’ve yet to see much positivity around ZRS online, after all this time I’d have expected it to settle down.

Oh well, it is what it is. I’ll just selectively pick a race a week I fancy, usually flattish, and the remaining rides will be with pace bots to get a drops boost towards shiny new bikes 😎

ZRS isn't based on w/kg though (other than to set the seed score). And who goes in the D pen will depend on what ZRS boundaries are set for each pen by the race organisers.

These "Rolling with Enve" races have two different ways of splitting the pens based on ZRS which they call Range 1 and Range 2. This was a Range 2 race so D pen was a ZRS of 210-330, but there is also the option of Range 1 for which D Pen would be the lower ZRS range of 160-270 where you'd expect to see lower power numbers on average.

That looks really odd how the 1st, 2nd and 9th riders appear to have a big drop in ZRS, which in itself is odd, but if true should mean they shouldn't have even been able to join that pen with their previous ZRS (as the boundary was up to 330)! I don't know what's going on there at all!

I still have problems in working out what's a race that does affect ZRS scores and what's one that doesn't. Did a long (for Zwift) 50km race on Saturday which did use ZRS scores to set the pens, but when I looked at the results afterwards it didn't actually seem to change anyone's scores. Surely if you're going to use them pre-race, they should affect you post-race or am I reading too much into this?

Yes that was bothering me too. Neither of the first two had raced in 6 months but I don't really understand how their score then went down. The guy in second is a B so had been riding in higher quality fields beforehand.

I can understand that being out for 6 months reduces your score but then winning your race destroys it? Are they still refining this system or is it just going to linger in current form

I detest ZRS, but I think the ZRS plugin is showing negative score changes for some riders that did well, is due to the plugin showing the net change to their ZRS since their last race which was months ago.

They've lost their old 5min seed from the previous 90 days, they've then had this silly ZRS decay because they haven't raced for 30 days, so their ZRS has dropped like a stone... Far more than the ZRS points gains in this recent race for position; podium bonus and any new 5min seed score 90-day best.

There are so many flaws with ZRS, I honesty think it's worse than all other Zwift racing systems I've raced under since '18, Zwiftpower (average of best three 95% of 20mins W/Kg in last 90 days) and Category Enforcement (pen allocation based on predicted 6min and 40min+ ability).

that makes sense but its a really confusing way to visualise it.

I don't like it either but i do think if there are at least 3 different scoring systems at least people can't hyperfixate on ways to cheat all of them. maybe? Not much of an upside
