I’ve bought some new shoes as dedicated hill-climb racing footwear. They’re Carnac Baroudeurs - perhaps foolishly, I bought them without trying-on from Planet X, but at £69.99 I’d have happily gone through the rigmarole of returning them if they hadn’t fitted. First impressions are that (a) they fit (phew!), (b) they’re much much lighter than the two pairs of 15-year-old Sidi Geniuses that I use for the turbo and for general riding, and (c) however impractical it might be, white is the best colour for cycling shoes!

I’ll plonk them on the scales later if I can find some cleats.

I've had a few Carnac products and always been pleased with them. TT helmet and overshoes for sure, maybe something else too.
Those look alright. Think I'd have gone for a darker colour though. My current road shoes have >20,000 miles on them. I estimated a lifespan of 10,000 when I bought them

I've got three Carnac helmets, two jerseys, two pairs of shorts and a pair of sunglasses, and now these shoes. I'm going to have to invest in some Crep spray or similar to keep them clean, but generally I'll try to keep them pristine and for racing only. Black just doesn't look as good - white is for winners!

@alex_cycles and @Norry1,

https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/events/39397-bscc-durran-cup-broadrib-trophy-hill-climb

I think this is on the shorter version of the Burton Dassett course, maybe just over a minute of riding. I’ll be heading down to Hampshire that day so am planning to pull off the M40… it’d be great if either of you could make it!

KH5 CTT site says 1 mile at 9% - https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/courses/189-kh-5?v=upcoming

If you can do that in a minute I'll be impressed. But it does look interesting.

Funny though - the Strava segment called KH5 IS a minute https://www.strava.com/segments/5016364
(If you're Tiesj Benoot  )

I'm inclined to believe the Strava data, so yeah a bit over a minute YOU'RE TALKING MY LANGUAGE
(I did a hard effort on a 30s sprint segment which ended up being 7.3 W/kg over 1 minute outdoors today. Trying to get my sprint legs back.)

While the KH5 segment is a little short (starts after where the CTT site says it should), it's certainly more accurate than "1 mile"! I'd say the actual hill climb course as per the map is 0.36 miles / 580 metres.

By extending his activity I worked out Mr. Benoot's time on the course would be 1:12, but that's on a flying start (I'm assuming a hill climb event is a standing start? never done one myself)

I haven’t either, but that would be my guess.

Yep, all time trials are standing start. In flat TTs you’ll usually get a push start but HCs are strictly a held start only.

There are two versions of the KH5 course: this one finishes at the car park on the junction; the version that Martin and I rode last October finished somewhat further along (my activity length was 670m).

My best on the shorter of the two versions is 1:35 at an average power of 487W.

I may be up for this one but I've chunked on a fair bit of weight and let my fitness slip so I won't be setting any records :shy:

This year's national hill climb venue appears to be Matlock's Bank Rd, approx 0.6 miles 9% 313ft.

Fractionally easier than the final section of Harvesting Lane on the side of Buster Hill. Would make a decent training site!
