I've got an account. I try to look for stuff. Nothing makes sense. I get bored and give up.

Twitter is a mystery to me.

It's often in the news, but my attempts to look at the newsworthy tweets have always ended in frustration.

I once tried to look at an exchange Alan Sugar was involved in, but could only see his tweets which wasn't very satisfactory.

Browsing twitter is a waste of time, I don't know what I'm browsing for.

The hashtag system baffles me, although that's not helped by the difficulty of finding how to type a hash on a MacBook - there's no hash key on my keyboard.

I'm not having a go at twitter and certainly not its users, clearly lots of people get a lot out of it.

But am I the only one who finds the mechanism of tweeting opaque?
NO

I don`t understand it, and don`t want to understand it. All these people who talk "hashtag this hashtag that" etc, need to get a fecking life

There is a serious point about Twitter - my wife is a medical academic and finds it essential to communicate and interact with other health professionals. It's useful for disseminating research, making contacts and generating ideas. My wife has met a whole load of friends (many of whom are cyclists) via Twitter. Yes, there are trolls and idiots, but it's very easy to block them. I am also on Twitter, although I protect my Tweets, and use it to keep in contact with family and friends round the globe. I'm sure it's not for you, from reading your posts here, but others find it really useful.
Is there a way to do protected and open tweets? I use the open ones ... Good for complaining;), but I don't know how to do private ones.... And I need a way to communicate with one of my siblings to keep them in the sibling loop.

You can message people, which is effectively sending them a private tweet. I don't think it's it's possible to keep some some tweets open on a protected account - it's all or nothing. It's very easy to switch between accounts, especially on a phone, so if you use it for family communication a lot it would make sense to have two.
