When I am driving I don't hear cyclist .. even with the radio off I see them first !!
Quite, so why ban cyclists from wearing headphones, a car (or van/lorry/bus) is far easier to see from a bike.

I wont be buying any...Listing to music should be banned whilst riding on the road ,

I've never understood this. I'll admit to be ping pretty deaf anyway, and in particular struggle to differentiate noises like voices a sea of other noises (noisy classrooms were a nightmare) but I rarely hear anything on my bike even without headphones if I'm travelling at any speed, or it's windy. The sound of the wind masks everything else. In fact I find headphones with some low level spoken word playing helps my hearing because it stops the wind whistling in my ear.

Of course I also 'compensate' for wearing headphones by being very aware of what's around me all the time.

Absolutely barking idea.

1 - You need your wits about you and your hearing unhindered when cycling.

2 - Having tried listening to music while skiing and been shocked at the reckless way it made me ski, I reckon music while cycling might have a similar effect.

Thanks Guys, I'll hang up my cycling shoes this evening, being deaf I am clearly not fit or capable of riding a bike!

Bit personal!!

I wear a single "in ear" headphone in my left ear, and enjoy podcasts while I am cycling. I works well, and the headphones were ridiculously cheap and very good (I can even use voice commands while moving!), I can easily hear all noises - only the quietest of drive chains can sneak up on me. I can't see any reason to change.

FWIW, France has already banned headphones in any vehicle. http://www.thelocal.fr/20150618/french-drivers-banned-from-using-earphones But not car stereos. In its majestic equality, the law forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges.

These will make it safer to ride with earphones. I tried some on Sunday, they are really great, you can hear all around you, your music and they are really comfortable.

Does anyone have them? They are not cheap, but can be had for around £40 with a bit of shopping about.[/QUOTE]

How will it make cycling with headphones safer, when there's no evidence that cycling with headphones is inherently any.more dangerous than without?

Isn't Bojo paying for a w̶h̶i̶t̶e̶w̶a̶s̶h̶ study into how headphones are dangerous.

I have some and they are excellent however I only get to use them occasionally. For city riding I rely on my ears too much for any extra distractions. I don't mind using them on quieter country rides where visibility is good and traffic is (very) light but that's about it.

In built up areas, particularly during the day, I'll often hear a vehicle at a junction before I get a clear sight line, it's saved me more than once when some fool has not bothered to look properly before crossing/joining a road I'm on.
