I've had a bit of a search around and found there are bursaries available to pay for the course wherever it is in the country but only at selected schemes (cycle training West Midlands is one of them). So this could be an avenue to pursue.
Auntie Helen, I think you're right. Going through an organisation would be a better idea as they will look after the things like insurance etc. Luckily, as I had to work with kids (well occasionally take them to and from school anyway) I already have an enhanced CRB within the last six months, so that's one expense I don't have to worry about. I hope.
A H, any other advice would be most useful.
