Just heard a suggestion on local radio I quite like. Arm Police with paintball guns, the balls to be filled with 'smartwater'.

An encouragement for the mobs to disperse - the things hurt
Those in attendance are marked - the stuff is nigh on impossible to remove which would back up later prosecutions along with video evidence.

until you take an eye out and are prosecuted for ABH, GBH, assault, attempted manslaughter. Toy guns are not the answer. Last night residence in one town in SE London (Eltham birthplace of Bob Hope!) came out in force to "assist" the police. Not sure if it would have worked or not as the looters have all moved west where there is less police presence. But I see the logic in doing something rather than feeling trapped inside your own home by gangs of looters.

Removal of the monetary system, that could cure all these social/financial imbalances

PS I am not a socialist or an idealist, I just think the pursuit of money and over inflated sense of entitlement that it produces is ...well...inherently "un"good

police paintball sounds good... would make finding the little oiks easier and sending them either back to school (short summer holidays this year) or to Siberia never to be seen or heard of again.

Sorry but Darcus Howe has a singleminded agenda and has done himself no credit in the current situation. Trying to pain this as a race issue (e.g. his perfomance on Newsnight the other day) shows him to have lost touch somewhat with reality.

A pity - he used to be someone who had a clarity of thought.
to be fair, if you compare unemployment rates in London, you'll see that there is a solid percentage of A-C boys who will never have regular work - although Darcus Howe made the point, quite specifically, that stop and search was over-used on both black and white boys

Of course injuries are possible, however the potential is considerably less than drafting in troops and letting either them or the police open fire with real bullets and I cannot believe those who think this would somehow stop the rioting and make everything better again. Lets not forget that despite whatever reasons this is continuing it started off with a police shooting.

My local radio station phone in also has a share of those endorsing troops on the streets and shooting looters. Not sure if they are the same ones who think the 'youngsters' should do national service too.

Excellent!
I am so impressed at all the people working together to clean up the detritus of this fiasco, the people who have come out en masse, making physical barriers to prevent the looters entering their shop/street, and those who have been so vocal - someone posted a youtube clip on here the other day, a woman berating the looting morons for what they were doing.
Good to see some people-power for the positive.

Damn riots! I've just won something on Ebay, and the seller has emailed to say he can't post it until next week now, due to being a Met policeman and having all leave cancelled.

Summink outa be dun abaht it!

(Needless to say, my reply was not to worry, and to get round to it when he could...)

I've been struck by a few reporters and commentators asking interviewees "What makes these people think that this behaviour is acceptable?" I don't think for a moment that any of them DO think it's acceptable. They just see a chance to probably not get caught getting some free stuff. They know full well it's wrong, they just don't care.

I think its a classic example of people just not thinking through the ramifications of their actions. And I wouldn't be surprised if some of them simply don't have the intelligence to think that they might get caught. Case in point:-
