Be impolite not to offer a snifter from the hip flask, a pinch of snuff and a piece of flapjack too!!
...and downright rude not to open up the picnic basket and offer some lobster and a glass of bolly, surely.

Quite right Fnaar. Any serious cyclist would offer them a cigarette and a match too. ;)

Just walking to bank to pay a cheque in after physio appointment and there was an old boy cruising down the high street on an aged (but still in good shape) road bike puffing on a stogie!

I tried to get phone out of pocket to take a picture but I was too slow!

When I lived in Gatley, a chap used to jog past my house (in running kit) whilst puffing on a cigarette. Best of both worlds, and all that.

Must confess to blanking a fellow hybrid rider this morning who politely said "good morning" at the lights.

Mostly though this was because I was holding my tongue to stop from berating him, for passing me in the ASL after I had passed him half a mile up the road.

I did however say "goodbye" as i finally got room to pass him on his wobbly journey to work. (know it sounds smug, just hate people feeling the need to get in front at the lights, this goes too for cars who drift further up into the ASL when waiting).

I think one of the reasons people don't acknowledge each other is related to this: the more you notice and observe other cyclists, the more narked you can become by their behaviour. If you don't pay them much attention (beyond the safety level of observing their road position etc) you don't think about how (badly) they are cycling and don't get narked by it. Simplez!

Interesting, so far I've found that I get a nod and hello from just about everyone who's out cycling just for the sake of it, be it lycra clad roadie or otherwise. Usually the ones I get blanked by are those who use a bike as a means of transport....

I'm not a miserable git but commuting in Central London daily, I just get "in the zone" and don't make eye contact with other cyclists. Trust nobody in this town...

I don't think it's just London - pretty much the same for me in Derby. I occasionally share a pass-the-time comment at traffic lights if another cyclist happens to be waiting there, but otherwise I've become a single-minded cyclist over the years. I'm too busy watching the road, the traffic and the peds to do much 'mobile socialising'.

If I go out in cycling clothes most other cyclists give a nod or wave. If I just nip out for a quick 30 miles in a shirt and cotton shorts, the same cyclists look at me like something the cat brought in if I give them a nod.

Will be an interesting experiment, have just started wearing lycra jersey etc rather than swimming shorts and t shirts so will see if:

a) I stop nodding, waving or saying hi to 'lesser' cyclists

and

 more elitist cocks serious cyclists start saying hi to me
