Discos have locking diffs, so even on naff tyres they're liable to munch their way along far better than a conventional car. Downside is your typical Fourbie driver doesnt have a clue, and forgets that they may get going well, but still requires care and skill to slow down and turn corners when the going is treacherous. It's rubbish like the X5 that really can't cut it in the snow, regardless of the boots you put on them.

If it's a Discovery 1 (the Tdi years), or a Discovery 2 (Td5 engine), they don't have axle differential locking (ie; to maintain equal wheel-speed on both near, & off, side)
They just a 'lock-up' on the transfer-box, but that only equates to a part-time (eg; Series 1 - 3 Land Rovers) system being engaged

That said, the centre diff-lock was deleted on some later years of production on the D2, thinking that the (then introduced) electronics would overcome the issue
Customer demands saw it reinstated

Discovery 3 & 4 have electronic whizzery that utilises the brakes to control wheel speed differences across the axle

All D1s have centre diff lock... If it's not seized.

Later D2s have centre diff lock, earlier ones have an electronic substitute (although its still there, just the linkage is missing and many owners simply fit a linkage and reinstate it). D3 and 4 have electronic simulation which mimics all sorts diff lock through to solid axle articulation. Even then you gotta understand how it works and remember that it does nothing to help with the lakes and little with the cornering.

Cross axle difflock is a different and slightly more specialised kettle of aquatic life, although many of the far eastern pick ups have that too.

You could've warned me before posting a pic of a Stolly. Gotta go change my Y fronts now

Perhaps I should have phrased my reply differently, by 'luck-up, the better known phrase is 'Central Diff-Lock'

Not had 5 Discoverys, had 2 (one was a 50th Anniversary), amongst my other Landies
I was in the 'DOC' for a while too, when I had the 50th (wouldn't mind a 300Tdi Commercial!!)

Can't find pic of other

I don't know if you use (used?) it, but I've been registered to 'Mud-Club.com', since day 1 (& still dip in every so often)

Amongst mine was a 90, a genuine factory build V8 CSW (not a 50th, but one of the late 80's models, 3528cc, with the SU carbs, 134BHP)

THIS was my last Landie, a 'Heritage' (Td5)

Looking northwards towards LadyBower Reservoir (blue in distance), must have been down at Shatton?

No, I didn't break the Gate, the tree had fallen on it, then was moved aside

We had a Range Rover Classic for a bit (morse chain centre diff). Enjoyed owning it and went to a few off road play-day sites. Dalby forest was good far a leisurely day out. Even then the street to the house once snow was hard packed and after a thaw and re-freeze proved to my wife 4x4 doesn't conquer all as once you've braked hard enough to lock all wheels and start sliding it just means you have the same grip, nothing, but more momentum than a 'normal' car.

Here in Brazil the TV channels are a bit limited, I end up watching a lot of Discovery/History channels. And the endless repeats involved. I don't mind watching repeats with the apprentice in it.

Last night I was watching an old episode of 'Sin City Motors', & there was a great 'Mack rod'
http://www.welderup.com/

However, it's not a pick-up
This is........................ http://www.welderup.com/builds/pick-up-rod/
The 'Apprentice', to use Guy Martins words, isn't "Hard to look at!"
Well worth a look, for the petrolheads (it's on 'Dave' channel)
