I've posted it before, but this is a cracker: John Worsley.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/1369208/John-Worsley.html

with this classic quote:

Worsley was a connoisseur of gun-deck language and enjoyed recalling how the commandant of the camp subsequently addressed the PoWs in his fractured English. "You think we Germans know f*** nothing," he told them. "But in fact," he went on confidently, "we know f*** all." It took some time to restore the parade ground to order.

Apparently his sons Gene van Flitcroft and James Harlequin Flitcroft were the first people to receive an ASBO in the UK.

They had been arguing and started sword fighting to settle the matter.

And were also disco dancing world champions!

Thanks for that. I've just ordered the biography of him "Phantom of the Open".

Spoiler alert -

I think it contains the following extract:

His crane cab, incidentally, had teak floorboards, a ceiling and floor in different shades of green, a luxury car seat, "an easel on which to paint, and a bookshelf on which to house a small library and a collection of notepads, into which he scribbled idle thoughts".

It should be a great read.
