For the sake of a tenner, I would contact your local police station to see if the bike was stolen. If it was, the owner might be happy to have it back and may even re-imburse you the tenner for your honesty and help.

I agree with Rob3rt, shall only take five minutes to give them the serial number and if it isn't stolen then you walk away with a fantastic deal and if it is you can hold your head up high.
