Caveat: Fully aware I might get a more definitive answer visiting a specialist, but...

...the past couple of weeks my lower back has been clicking or cricking a lot. It isn’t painful but the sensation is an annoyance and disconcerting. It is almost as if something isn’t where it should be and my spine is moving around in an atypical manner. I get plenty of omega in my diet and my core is very strong. I work outdoors and I have been doing a lot of tree work recently. It doesn’t negatively affect my ridng experience. 44 years old. Handsome. Usual stuff.

Any ideas what is going on?

Muscle imbalance? See a physio...or don't if it doesn't hurt. Maybe just do some lower back stretching or pilates. Use a heat pack for 10 mins beforehand

S-I joint dysfunction is usually defined as pain caused by abnormal motion (too much or too little) in the joint. Symptoms include pain at or near the joint, audible and palpable clicking or popping at the joint during movement, and tenderness to palpation.

Yep. SIJ issues v common in cyclists I’ve been told in past.
Google for exercises. Core strength good but you also need balance in glutes, hamstrings, calves, hip flexors etc etc etc

Judging by the last line of the long winded paragraph, I think you might be delusional.

Early sept I was in total agony with my back - I couldn't even sit comfortably. One night I went to A+E as I just couldn't sleep with the pain. They gave me some tramadol - which made me feel dead weird - then onto hefty does (like 8 a day) Co Codamol - and Naproxen.

Once the pain got bearable I enrolled onto pilates and yoga classes - sometimes these left me in a worse state than when I started - but the general trend was improvement so I stuck with it.

I then started doing the attached core exercises twice daily - combined with the yoga/core things were coming along nicely. My Physio suggested I start treadmill and biking - I wasn't keen - I felt I would go back to square one. Eventually I did a 45 minute interval set on a gym exercise bike - sweating like hell - but for some reason that pushed me into almost pain free -now down to 2 pain killers a day.

The exercises are attached - don't expect instant results, but worth a try if anyone is suffering.
