It'll work as long as the shifters are later than 2,000/2,001. That's when the cable pull changed on the old 9 speed and the mech geometry was altered to suit.

According to Sheldon it will still work as the change was minimal. I will find out if he's right one day as I have a pair of '99 vintage Veloce shifters with less than 100 miles on them.

If all else fails with Shimano mechs they'll index standard 5 and 6 blocks, hubbub the cable and it's 7 speed or use a modern Campag mech and they work Shimano 8.
There's someone from Hampshire on another forum would have a nervous breakdown with that.
