Daft question the old Claris front derailleur fits perfectly is there any reason why I just can't use this with the new 105 set up
It would probably be OK.
But why not try taking the band off it and using that on the 105 FD?

FD's don't need a pull ratio. Only difference would be a triple/double.

That bands not coming off its riveted , isn't it ?
Ah. I had expected it would be bolted on somehow.
You can get purpose made adapters for smaller seat tubes

Although that says ultegra in the heading, the compatibility list includes 105 for 10 (5800/5801), 11(7000) or 12 (7150) speed.
You look as if sorted but, be aware that if you keep the Claris FD on temporarily like, the cage will be wider (an 8sp chain is wider than an 11sp) so the 'indexing' will need a bit of care and the changes may not be as crisp as you'd like, but it'd work, as @fossyant implies.Daft question the old Claris front derailleur fits perfectly is there any reason why I just can't use this with the new 105 set up

You're replacing a compact with a compact chainset, right? Same size large ring?

105 shifters allow you to "feather" the front mech (something I've never got the hang of but I read about it in the manual). Would this still be effective (if you actually know how to use it) with the Claris mech?
