105 rear brake caliper with reynalds 501 frame

im rebuild an old raleigh record sprint 501 frame and ive just bought a 105 brake caliper, the internal fixing cap is too wide for the hole in the frame, the bolt is too short for the frame to fix with a tradional nut.
can you 1. dismantle the caliper and rebuild with a longer bolt or 2. drill out the frame

Surely the problem is that it's a frame designed for a nut-fitting brake, and the OP has a recessed-fitting brake?
Personally I'd drill out the brake bridge. You're going to have the same problem on the front forks too.

You could do both of those things.

A new longer bolt can be had for about £8+P&P from SJS Cycles, or if you have the tools you could just drill out the brake bridge.

The rear brake bridge is kind of at an awkward angle to drill out, as you only need to drill the hole on the inside of the rear triangle so the seat tube tends to get in the way (if that makes sense). If you can't comfortably drill out the brake bridge you can always use a front brake caliper on the rear with a regular nut and washer, as the bolt is longer.

The backside of the fork is very easy to drill out - It needs to be drilled out to 8mm.

you could do what i did a while back on an elderly Carlton after reading a Sheldon article , fit the rr caliper on the fr fork by inserting a nut inside the fork bridge and securing the short threaded section with said nut , and then use the fr caliper with long threaded section on the rear and secure using normal nut .... simples

sure others will say no , but i have done it on 2 bikes and not had a problem so far and lord shelton says yes
