Unfortunately I am unable to afford to buy a complete Campagnolo 11 speed Super Record groupset in one go so I've had to buy the components separately.

Consequently I've got as far as buying the cassette, chain and Ergo levers. Along the way I've come across all sorts of stories about compatability issues, special tools etc.- it seems that many of them are little more than myths put about by crafty market men and people who haven't actually tried it out!

1. You need a Campag pin and special (£120 special) tool to joint he 11 speed chain - wrong! Ice Toolz make a £20 chain breaker that does the job beautifully and a SRAM Powerlock works beautifully in joining the chain (no fouling, doesn't get caught in between the cogs etc.).

2. You have to use an 11 speed front mech or it will foul/rub on the chain - wrong! I have a 10speed front mech operating beautifully!

3. You have to use the special 11speed rear mech - wrong! My 10 speed Record mech works fine!

OK, so the result is that I seem to have saved a rather large bundle of cash (or numbers on the credit card) in order to upgrade from 10speed to 11speed. I will be replacing both front and rear mechs with 11SR in the very near future but I doubt very much if I'll end up 'invesiting' in the Campag chain pins (£5 ea) or the Campag chain tool at £120 or so.

I can report that it worked on the road like a dream:smile: I went out on the usual Sunday club run (sprints, blasts up hill, long drags, chains etc.) for 45 miles and the system behaved faultlessly

Excellent!!!!

But why, may I ask, you want to upgrade the front and rear derailleurs if the 10 speeds work well?

I'm sure you know this already but derailleurs don't really control how well the gears change, that is done by your shifters..... in saying that I can tell you I'm running 10 speed Campy shifters with shimano front and rear derailleurs. So, I don't think you have to change your derailleurs at all.

As you say, some clever marketing strategy wants you to think that a 11 speed derailleur is for an 11 speed shifter, when I think (with very few exceptions) the chain has more of an impact in what derailleur you use.... for instance, an 8 speed chain might be to thick for your front derailleur.

Manufacturers don't like you to mix and match each others components, let alone their own.
ie Shimano say don't mix 105 with Ultegra or Ultegra with Dura Ace.. pftttt...

LOL To be 100% honest mate - because I'm a tart who can't resist having the 11spd SR logo all over my drive train:smile:

I "need" to have the 'proper' front and rear mechs - until I do I will feel a little uneasy about things - a sign of obsessive behaviour?

Nope - too bloody cold out to mess about with the camera! I might have a go indoors in the study - wait out.

haha ok, just wanted to see what it looks like, thinking of going 11 speed on the madone

Here is my SR porn  The trouble with 11 speed is if i shift one sproket, i always have to look down as the 1 tooth difference can be quite subtle.......but that's the point really. I just need to learn to trust my talents as a mechanic. lol
