Hose adaptor thingy is failing (plastic degrades over time, no surprise). Found a newer-looking one in the shed: the inner shaft is a SMIDGE too fat to shove the existing hose onto.

Common problem??

Stick the end of the hose in a cup of boiling water for a minute or two, it'll soften enough to go on.

Yep,
Hoses are a nightmare. The 12.5mm is the internal diameter. The outer diameter and wall thickness can vary a lot between brands.

That's why your new connector doesn't fit. You either need to warm the hose end in hot water to soften it and force it on, or just get a different connector.
