Well done - onwards, and upwards!

I had set myself a goal of 4,000 miles, then realised that 11 miles a day average would be 4,015 so I added the extra 15. Barring illness or injury, I will get there before the middle of November.

I have done 3,843 miles so far and will be going out on my bike this afternoon. I am doing a longish audax ride next Sunday (see signature link below). I will probably do enough miles between now and the weekend for the audax to take me to my target in style.

I will have to reset my target to something higher, but winter is looming so it will be a modest increase!

I will be 60 in January and have decided to stick two fingers up at the ageing process by ramping my target up to 6,000 miles next year. 60 * 100 seems very appropriate!

by surgery so have decided to stick with it.
It's the big 75 next Feb. Aiming for 3000 miles next year.

I've met quite a few riders in their 70s still, like you, doing plenty of riding. I've also met a few riders in their 80s. I don't think I have yet met one over 90 but I know that there are a few out there.

put me to shame you lot! 1,200 this year!

In my defence I can't cycle commute and a lot of my rides are family ones so take all morning to do 20miles! I'm sure I'll regret saying this when he's a teenager and beating me everywhere (assuming he'll still want to ride with his mum as a teenager!? prob not!)

and I will hit my 3000 mile target for the year. I know it's not a lot compared to many on here but it's the first year I will have reached it so feel pretty chuffed.
Well its a lot compared to me.............well done sire. I have just topped my 1000.......BUT it is my first 'proper' year of cycling.

Just surpassed my 15K target, so readjusted to 17.5K.
Not all outdoors though as turbo has had some use.
Must establish number of hours spent cycling so far when I can log on to Strava.

I'm on course for 2500 (excluding exercise bike used earlier in the year after knee surgery), 2436 as of now according to Strava :smile:

Did 1,600 miles last year, being the first time cycling in 20 years or so. Target is 2,500 miles of non commuting miles this year. Am sitting at 2,241 so far, but not managed to get out so much this month. :smile:

There's no way I am not going to hit that target though!

Met an old French cyclist while taking a drinks break somewhere in the Languedoc hills earlier this year. I'd ridden about 20 miles in gentle/moderate hills before stopping. He had done that on top of riding 20 miles from Beziers, and he was on his way to the "mountains" beyond for a day trip. He said he was "not quite on form today", adding, "but then I am 80" and carrying on uphill !! Put me to shame he did.
 
Well Done! I missed 3000 by 20 miles in 2013(nasty icy weather right at the end of the year) but beat it buy 300 in 2014.... this year I'm going to miss it by at least 500 miles this year as only at 1800 miles due to spending a lot of the last 4 months commuting by a works van to a different branch to where I normally work.... (and I've put on nearly half a stone :ohmy:)
 
Congrats all, I always wonder though why targets are necessary, presumably it aids motivation in some way? Is it not enough to just enjoy riding then take a look at the end of the week / month / year to see what distance you ended up with? If we do a ride that shows on the speedo as 98 miles when we get home, there is no desire to go out and complete 100. Over the years I have discussed this with many cyclists and it seems to be the newer you are, the more you are likely to set targets [obviously there are exceptions like Steve Abrahams or racing a 12 hour]. I often wonder why, particularly after reading these type of threads. No criticism implied, just genuinely interested.

A good question. I read a book called "Just Ride it!" recently, and agreed with much of the similar content. Among other questions the author wondered whether you would ride your bike at all if you never told anyone about it. If not. then you are doing it for the wrong reasons.

For me, the reason I set targets is that I am fundamentally a lazy person. If I could convince myself that I had done enough then I would call it a day as soon as it started to get tough. Which is fine if all you want to do is tootle about on the flat. If what really gets your pulse going is the thought of cycling in the hills and high mountains, and being able to go absolutely anywhere on a bike when you are on your hols, that just doesn't cut it.

I always used to cheat on my school cross country runs, and as a result always got the stitch just running for a bus. In PE lessons I perfected the art of waiting for the teacher to start turning towards me and then looking like I had just completed tackling one of the pieces of apparatus. When I took up cycling several decades later, I was determined not to cheat myself out of making the progress I wanted to make, so I set myself targets. This years targets were...
(1) Complete the Cyclechat Metric Century a Month Challenge (still in, one ride to go)
(2) Cycle further this year than ever before (job done)
(3) Go cycling in the Alps again (got up a good 'un that is going to feature in next year's TDF) and
(4) Do my first 100 mile ride.

Still working on number 4. With the shorter days and the worsening weather, I doubt whether I will find the right day to get that done this year now, so that's a definite for next year. I guess my point is that, being 6 foot 5 and 20 stone, without setting myself those targets, I wouldn't have had the slightest chance of riding around in the Peak District, the Cotswolds or the Mendips, let alone getting up any Alps this year. Targets can be a really positive thing.
