that made me swear and go cold at the same time. That driver needs taking off the road for everyone's sake, and the sooner the better.

There are two problems here. And the first one is the first HGV that passes him. Which imo is a poor overtake, the speed differences and his size, he needs to be completely in the other lane. If the first HGV driver does that in plenty of time then the HGV that is behind him has time to see Darrel and move over into the second lane safely.
But at the point that the second HGV see's him (which is probably as the first HGV overtakes him), there is already a flat bad overtaking him so he can't move out. You can see that the flat bed is on the solid white lines and is probably very close to the oncoming traffic as the HGV did move out slightly to avoid Darrel.

Darrel is very lucky!

Agreed with gaz, the artic driver was sandwiched.

This is a situation where I feel a segregated cycle route would have safety benefits. Would any of the ardent anti- segregationists care to comment please?

That road is due to become a proper DC with full central reservations. I don't know whether they have any cycling remits.

That road is very well known to me and I would never choose to cycle down it.

Oi! Whats with the title! One upmanship?!?;)

Seriously though that was pretty shocking!:angry:

That looks like a horrible road to cycle on. My normal instincts would be to take a stronger position, but there is a time an a place for that, and I don't think this is the place. the traffic is just too fast. Best to avoid cycling there in the future if possible.

Still, there is no excuse for HGV driving like that. The driver needs to be 'encouraged' to look for a different job.

That was a shocker. I saw the first HGV whizz past and thought it was a little close. I wasn't ready for the second one

Regardless of riding in primary or strong secondary, some roads are just not safe. I personally avoid national speed limit dual carriageways like the plague. At those speeds there is very little you can do but hope you don't get tw@tted from behind

I hate to say it but you ride on a road like that & you've got to expect very close passes, in this instance the lorry driver didn't have much he could do. Overtaking vehicle which he squeezed as much as he could, hard braking would be likely to cause a jack knife & thus some kind of collision. If you were to take the lane would be near suicide & lead to collisions etc.

This is a situation where I feel a segregated cycle route would have safety benefits. Would any of the ardent anti- segregationists care to comment please?
From my perspective I wouldn't want a segregated path there. I'd want a dedicated cycle way

Which driver do you mean? The driver of the Hargreaves artic who found himself in a sandwich between a cyclist and an overtaking vehicle. Or the driver of the overtaking vehicle who, if the cyclist had been visible to him, could have anticipated the Hargreaves artic would require to pull into the right hand lane, and should have held back until the cyclist had been overtaken.
The safety factor for cyclists is low on a road like that.

From the video description, it seems that there is a (probably substandard) cycle path along this road, which then disappears.

That's pretty negligent, given that it effectively encourages cyclists to progress along a road, and then leaves them facing this kind of situation.
