Funnily enough we did the whole camping thing for years, even when kids arrived, then after spending 2 wet weeks in Ireland, came back and said stuff that we need to get a caravan. Now need a bigger van, 5 of us crammed in this wee one we own!

because of returning to UK hubby has no summer hols. Therefore want a few camping weekends a traind ride from London. Am I peeing in the wind or will I find vacancies? Also looking at a vango diablo which has a pitch size of 7 ish by 8 ish m. Am I better off buying a smaller tent?
Help...never camped before.

My comment would be that the footprint of the tent is quite large because of the shape - I think you could still have large space with a smaller footprint by going for a rectangular base shape. The other advantage of that is that all the sleeping pods face the same way - otherwise you are having to work out how to accommodate two different angles for sleeping when pitching on a slope. Our main tent is big 6 x 4 and we use that when we want indoor space in case of wet weather when going away for a week or two. But it takes about 1 hour to put up and put up all the bedding etc.

The Khyam Harewood seems to be the tent formerly known as ridgidome. Now on our second The first did 8 years and 9*3 weeks in France plus lots of local trips before zips and seam seals gave out. Goes up and watertight in around 10mins, under an hour from brakes on/boot open to fully equipped camp home and first bottle breached. Unless exchange rates have dramatically affected prices it should be available well under the £500 quoted on the khyam website.

But where to camp ?

What a nightmare that is. Checked out Sandy Balls rec. from other thread but they're full (with electric, and I don't know how to live without a fridge and no my car won't do it, rang Volvo to check) Any recs would be lovely. that campsite UK site confuses the hell out of me. Looking for sites anywhere that hubby could come to on the train from London on a Friday night. + any regions with good kids bike riding, have 1 option in the New Forest that looks good.

You just need a cool box - camp sites often have freezers where you can put your blocks for a small amount (20p or free), and then just keep milk, cheese, veg, fruit juice etc and buy fresh daily for any meat. We have just bought a solar panel but have yet to use it camping - currently using it to power a pump for watering the garden but I think Mr Summerdays was thinking it could power our cool box.

Like my wine very chilled. As a 1st timer am too nervous to venture without electric. But am sure it's better for a quieter site.

Could always rig up a 12v battery to power one of those 12v coolers?
When me and my dad would go for a night, we would have it on at home by a power supply we use for radios to get it cold, then have it on in the car on the way to the site, and every so often turn it on when we were at the site/in the field.
We went camping with no facilities though.
Well, there was a big diesel genny on the field, but we didnt have an extension lead to run to the other extension leads so did without.
I wouldnt be too fussed about electrics though.
You can get a power lead, a proper one that is, which has the right plug on the end, with a fused box on the other end of the long cable and can take about 4 plugs, maybe a few more? They are like £50 though.

Another good reason to have a caravan;)
My parents book a couple of weeks in advance before they go away for the weekend. There are a few sites that you have to book well in advance for.
Im guessing with tenting sites its the same?
