1).......is there any way to check if I need new tyres ? Mine came with the bike (Giant Defy). They have done, perhaps, 2,500 miles. They don't show any obvious signs of wear-----but I realise they don't last forever.
Bike is in for a full service in 2 weeks so thinking of getting new ones fitted for the summer.

2).....I want puncture resistance........easy rolling.........comfort (for my old bum). Are Conti 4000 still recognised as the best (for my needs).
Thanks

I think you've just nailed it there...

After 2500 miles, think I'd be inclined to remove the tyres from the wheels and spend five minutes inspecting each one to make sure they were still up to scratch.

I wouldn't say that 2500 miles is worn necessarily, for marathon+ that would barely count as broken in.

Unless you have reason to believe they are worn (for example you can see the carcass under the rubber) I'd say you were fine.

Perhaps check them with a bit more regularity for now. I usually replace my tires when I start getting more punctures than usual.

I find that after 1000 miles or so the rear has squared off noticeably, at which point a swap front front to rear is done. When the punctures start happening, then the tyre is usually ready for replacement, which you'll see when the tyre is off.

Check them regularly for cuts that have affected the carcass and carry on riding.
