I'm 17st at the moment and desperate to get a road bike but I'm going to keep on slogging away on the hybrid until I get down to about 14st. Which should be around November time. I want to get fitted for the bike at my target weight so that I know it'll last me a good while, I don't want to get one now and realise it's not right once I lose my flab (and it is flab, I'm not a darts-player capital-D type of fat ;)). I was in the LBS at the weekend, they've just started doing Cube's, VERY nice bikes!

The geometry on a touring bike won't be exactly the same as a road (race) bike as they are designed to have a little more comfort for longer time spent int he saddle and not quite as much commitment to speed. You are right though they would do as a heavy duty road bike and they tend to have stronger frames to carry bags on etc.

Have a troll around you could also look at cyclcross bikes they are racing bikes for use off road or on light trails and tracks. They are strongly built and have a very similar geo to a road race bike, they often have caliper brakes to stop the crud getting caught up in the wheels and they can be great commuting bikes cos they can take racks and mudguards. They also have drop handlebars. Good luck.

A common misconception.

A roadrace will be about 4 - 6 hours duration.
A tour will be broken up by cafe stops every 2 hours at the most.

Not many tourists ride on the drops, but raceboys often hold the bars below the levers.

Personally, I've sorted out my geometry for racing and touring, and it's the same.

Sorry, and I dont want to be sceptical or sound petty (but accept I probably do ) but it doesnt seem to add up, a 20 plus stone chap on a mountain bike doing a 22 to 24 mph average over 6.5 miles, have you got your computer set to the right wheel size ? that kind of average on the flat is usually the preserve of whippet like club riders on road bikes, even Time Triallers, if it is spot on as you say then you should be looking at getting on the olympic team !

I would however love to be overtaken by someone such as yourself travelling between 5 and 7 mph faster than my usual average as it would mean that there would be someone to exact retribution on the roadie that had the temerity to overtake me the other day !

Yes, I was rather thinking that. Even a totally flat 6.5, with slicks on, is going some on a MTB. 24mph would be........something.

Do they have bikes for my weight ? or can I use my own ?

The velodrome bikes are plenty sturdy enough-I should know.....you're local aren't you?

What I think GB155 is saying is that when he's pushing hard and motoring along on 'flat' he does about 22-24mph but his average speed for the 6.5 mile run is a lot lower.
