Unless the road stops at your house, go in the opposite direction to the hill for a mile and back again to warm up.

Or alternatively, do what I do. Spray yourself all over with Brut 33 and have a hot bath before setting off.

If you pedal backwards at just the right speed you can stay upright while stationary. Something to do with gyroscopes and witchcraft.

In theory, it could lead to the pedals unscrewing themselves, but that's extremely unlikely in the real world. I

Happened more than once on my daughters bike (she was 3 at the time, bike was on a followme tandem, probably pedalled backwards more than forwards)
