It was an extra bank holiday, and the pubs were open all day – if you are under 40 you probably don’t realise how exceptional and exciting that was in 1981! A friend came up to Norwich on the coach, and with my girlfriend (now wife) we traipsed round our favourite city pubs, before settling for an afternoon of drinking pints on the pavement of St Benedict’s Street, outside the Ten Bells.

There was also some pantomime gubbins going on on the telly, but we didn’t bother with that.

I was living in St Andrews and just went into work as I had nothing better to do at the time.

We had a street party, I was 5!
I dressed up as superman, in blue pajamas, red pants and a cape made out of red curtains. My mum has a photo somewhere.

Brandane

The Costa Clyde rain magnet.
I was working in a pub on the Isle of Bute on the day. It went pretty much unnoticed, as I suspect it did in the rest of Scotland and the British Isles with the obvious exception. If only the poor woman had a crystal ball, she would have run a mile.

The Royal Weeding. I went to France for the day to avoid it and the proprietor of the cafe where we lunched brought out a portable TV for us to watch it on.

Funnily enough I was in France when they buried her as well.

I remember deliberately staying away from the TV but I can't remember where that was or who was watching.

Myself and the first Mrs SJ were on holiday then, we were in Clovelly (Devon or Cornwall, can't remember?) that day and avoided the whole mess.

I remember photos of my dads Off Licence all decorated up with flags but can't remember what I did, probably played and watched bits of if on TV (I'd have been 11). I remember the day she died better, I was at a friends with my toddler who woke early and we couldn't work out why there was no TV apart from news, when the friend woke up her boyfriend was all sympathetic until they cancelled the football because of it. On the day of the funeral I was at a mates house playing Carmaggeden most of the day and my father in law refused to call the ambulance when my mother in law collapsed (ongoing medical condition) because he thought it would be disrespectful, but then he was of another age.

July 1981 - I was probably working, picking berries, as I did most summer school holidays. I remember seeing it on the TV news and thinking "royal nobbers", some things never change as I think the same when I see the parasites on TV now.
