Hi everyone!

I’m working on my bachelor’s thesis about how cyclists plan their routes – and I’d love your input.

The survey takes just 3 minutes, and your answers will directly help improve bike navigation tools based on real cyclist preferences.

Whether you cycle for commuting, fitness, or fun – your insights matter.
Thanks a ton for your time and support!

Ride safe,

doesn't include a thing for
"go off and work it out as I go along and use my smartphone if I get lost after wandering around in random direction for an hour or so"

or - when I was a kid - just keep wandering until I find something I recognise
only the Gods know where I went when I was a teenager - I learned to recognise the different building styles of the counsel estates all over the Wirral as they gave be a clue as to the way home

very interesting really - built before a certain time could be seen by the lack of anywhere to park a car - after that they started thinking about it

sorry - woffling (again)

What's wrong with using a map, paper, to plan your route, or on the go?

Often it's a case of I'm at A, wanting to get maybe D. I know where both are, it's then a case of riding from one to the other. Previous knowledge of parts of the route being used to choose/plan a route.

Oh nothing at all, but I really like sitting at a computer and zooming in/out on where to go. I have many paper maps and books which I read and then plan.

I'm making an effort at the moment to ride more south of where I live, the Huddersfield/Emley moors. Its very hilly but I'm slowly piercing together my knowledge.

I do like Strava for "experimental rides"

much easier than the old days when I got an OS map and tried to work out where I might have gone

I use RideWithGPS/Komoot and a Garmin for rides. Komoot doesn't directly interface with Garmin though on the free version, I have to export the route as GPX and import it to RideWithGPS. Komoot is very good for finding suggested rides though.

I use either a combination of local knowledge/a good sense of direction and/or just figuring it out as I go along, or... A map!

I also had to be honest and put the lowest milage, as I have not been cycling as much as I should have been of late.
