3D all depends on the content and the type of 3D.

Many 3D films are conversions and were NOT filmed in 3D.

Titianic or Avatar are considered some of the best 3D blurays to view, especially on an ACTIVE TV. None of this Passive malarky

I watched Thor 3D last night using active 3D. This was a conversion and not too much 3D going on but it does add some dimension to the film.

Whenever a 2d version of a movie exists, that's the one I watch. Gravity in 3d was just awesome however. The only other movie I saw in 3d was avatar and that too was excellent.

Generally I like 3D but it works better in some films than others. The director of the film really has to understand it and make the most of it. I've seen some films that were terrific in 3D (Avatar and Monsters vs Aliens spring to mind) and others where the effect was too subtle with the result that there was little to no benefit in seeing the 3D version. (Shrek 4).

Conversions are pretty variable too. The conversion of Jurassic Park was fabulous  and you'd think it had been filmed like that originally. The one for The Phantom Menace was a complete waste of time:thumbsdown:. (I notice that the project to convert the rest of the Star Wars films got dropped pretty quickly.)

The few 3D films I've seen I've really enjoyed.
Mostly been animations rather than live action though. Up was great. Avatar, less so.

The very best 3D films I have yet seen were 20 years ago at (the then) Euro Disney. They had a Star Wars feature, and the Michael Jackson 'Thriller' dance video.
I might have been 10 at the time and it was clearly all a gimmick, but I have still to see 3D of that quality elsewhere.
I might be wrong, but I think the media museum at Bradford had/has something similar.

'UP' left me a bit cold, so hopefully Gravity will live up to my expectations.

Pretty much all of the 3D films I've seen haven't been worth it. Gravity sounds like it could be worth it though seeing as it's made as a 3D film, not conversion from 2D.

I am going to see Gravity on Tuesday in IMax 3D so will be interesting if its use of 3D is immersive as the critics say.

Oooh...IMAX. I saw 3D Avatar there, but nearest one (Bradford) is too far away for a regular visit. IMAX tends to be immersive anyway as depending on where you are sitting you lose the screen edges. Gravity really sounds like IMAX is the perfect format for it.

Agree that wearing active glasses on top of specs is a bit of a pain, so I just wear the 3d glasses bythemselves
My perception of 3D from movie screens and TVs is very poor, as I'm red/green colourblind. Everyone else in the family seems to think 3D TV is worth it though.
i don't know about tv but the new cinema 3d doesn't seem to work on the red/green thing anymore. Some other kind of magic.
Gravity is the first film Mark Kermode (Radio 5Live Film critic and noted 3D sceptic) has recommended to see in 3D rather than 2D. So Gravity may not be the best judge for the OP as a bar for all 3D films. For me most 3D films I've seen haven't really impressed me, after 20 minutes I stop noticing the effect and instead get annoyed about wearing the glasses. I am going to see Gravity on Tuesday in IMax 3D so will be interesting if its use of 3D is immersive as the critics say.
It was listening to Kermode on 3d that put me off the idea for so long. Interesting he thought it added something with Gravity.

Interesting. I wonder if the Hobbit is converted. As I mentioned the trailer was on before Gravity and the characters were like cardboard cut outs in front of a flat background. Pretty bad.

Effin PITA wearing Effin 3d glasses over normal glasses.
I was concerned but they fitted fine over mine, forgot I was wearing them.
