I'd love to know where these actually are. They have been re-doing J16 of the M5 but most of the requests to make it easier for cyclists have been rejected by the HA on grounds of cost.

What are they doing there ... I went through there today and they seem to be digging to the side of the slip road.... are they making the slip road wider next? And I thought they had agreed to a set of lights on the slip road (on one side at least), no idea what you are meant to do if you want to go back the opposite way not on the road.

Reading that link I don't think installing lights on slip roads is actually going to encourage more people to cycle (not saying it won't be nicer for some of those to use, but won't tempt new people to start). The roads usually leading to any motorway junction are usually pretty busy multi-lane roads and they don't always have cycle paths on either side leading to them. If the motorway slip road is a barrier then so are the other roads local to it, so they need to think about more than the actual motorway junction.

I looked up the consultation replies the other day.

The northbound off slip has a pedestrian controlled crossing, but the southbound on slip does not.

The northbound on slip does not have one.

You have to dice with traffic joining the M5 whether you are going up or down the A38.

For this reason when heading north of an evening (forced onto the right hand side of the road by other roadworks) I join traffic coming OFF the M5 on a red light and launch onto the roundabout with them when their light goes green !

I attended a cycle forum meeting in the autumn where the highway engineers were talking and they said then they were adding lights on the on slip road on the north of the motorway and we're trying to decide whether they needed to add them on the other side. I must admit I've used the gaps between light phases to cross, or joined the traffic on the road, but I'm not usually through there at rush hour.
