While Rapha loses its CEO, MAAP gains a new store in London. Except MAAP calls it a Lab, not a shop. I’m not sure what to make of MAAP’s rise, so I’m curious what you think.

MAAP Lab London brings together progressive design, community and culture in a space built for a life around bikes. From exclusive product drops and curated rides to events, conversations and creative collaborations, our doors are now open.
On the one hand, I'm not on board with MAAP’s marketing because it’s fuelling stratospheric prices for cycling clobber. On the other hand, MAAP may be good for engaging younger riders. I heard that MAAP London’s ride-outs get a couple hundred riders, which is many times more than my local club.

Sounds to me like a very upmarket, club run orientated, cycling hub.
Not for the likes of me

Never heard of MAAP. What are they about?
Currently, MAAP is the brand of choice for younger riders who prioritise fashion above affordability.

MAAP is one of the brands that’s eating Rapha’s lunch. (Pas Normal Studios being the other one that’s usurped Rapha.)

MAAP and PNS are extremely expensive. For example, this gilet retails for £245

Pertex Shield and therefore waterproof. I have a gilet that is waterproof, but less than £100. I quite like waterproof gilets or short sleeve waterproofs. But not at that price. Their temp range is also optimistic at lower end, if it is raining. Gilets don’t really keep you warm in cold and wet, more suited to warm and wet. The gilet does look fairly unremarkable.

A lab!

For crying out loud. What do they call a laboratory? A sauna?

The world has gone barking. Im a fit late 50s, probably have more disposable income than their target demographic, and dont mind paying for genuine quality. Nevertheless, daft nonsense like that would put me off ever crossing the threshold.

It’s not a lab. It’s a LaB, which is “at the intersection of contemporary creative culture and cycling.” Who knew?

It sounds barking. And yet the London LaB is getting more people on its ride-outs than many clubs. How many cycling clubs get two hundred riders turning up for a ride?

It’s fascinating that more people are participating in a rides organised by a clothing company than those organised by many clubs.
