700c tyre deterioration

Hi All,

I have a road bike with 700 x 23c tyres on it, the problem I have is that I have a line appearing on both sides and both tyes where the cotton is coming out of the casing around 4mm above the rim in perfect line with the rim. I thought at first something must have been rubbing but all is clear. both tyres are below maximum psi.

the tyres only have around 500 miles on them and are perfect in every other way.
Im just a little concerned that its going to blow out.

Any advice or pointers are appreciated.

Could be down to running them on low pressure... as you have stated .

If they are really bad may be best to change .

They are meant to be kept at high pressure, low pressure will cause the tyres to bend at the tyre walls where it isn't supposed to. I pump my tyres up weekly and keep them high

The pressure should be 90 to 100 lbs, which is difficult to achieve without a proper track pump.

He says "below maximum PSI", which is typically around 120. So assuming it's inflated to 100-110, then I'd suggest it might be your brake being misaligned. Press the brake lever and see where it touches on the wheel - it should be on the rim, but the wear you described could be cause by the brake pad being a few mm too high and rubbing the tyre side wall.

if you are referring to the threads which sometimes appear around the tyre/rim contact area - just pull them off and carry on...

Happens to my tyres quite frequently and as Citus says I just pull em off and carry on. I haven,t had a problem

generally 80-100psi they don't look like they have been rubbing, its cotton thread that seems to be coming out.

I had a similar problem last year but on 26" m b tyres.
Checked brake alignment etc and no rubbing on tyre.
They had been running at lower pressure over the winter. I replaced them with same tyres (Goodyear) and kept them pumped right up, no problem with them after 10 months.
I concluded that the walls had been damaged due to running deformed at low pressure.

If concerned, just get some new tyres. Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, it's your peace of mind

out of interest, are the tyres the original ones the bike came with from new? it's not unusual for new bikes to come with cheap tyres to keep the bike to the desired price-point. upgrading to a set of decent tyres (i recommend vittoria rubinos, the pro folders for extra convenience) will make a difference to the quality of the ride and probably last longer…
