8 to 9 speed

Can I replace an 8 speed cassette for a 9 speed cassette. On a set of mavic rims. Not into 7 8 or 9 speed. Don't know what fits what. Cheers.

When I upgraded from 8 to 9 speed I put the cassette on the same freehub, but IIRC it depended on exactly which freehub you had. My hub was a Shimano C201, which had a freehub that subtly different from most though.

It's usually fine, although you may need a spacer. Depends on the age of the hub, and make.

For clarity shifter means the control lever. The derailleur may well do 9-speed as well as 8- although again it depends on make. For a start, are we talking about Shimano or Campagnolo?

I thought the question was clear enough, i never mentioned shifter, The question was can i replace an 8 speed cassette for a 9 speed caddette.

The question itself was clear, but the "Not into 7 8 or 9 speed" confuses most of us about exactly what you want to do and why.

I don't think it is.
Are you interested in which cassettes will fit your existing hub, or which cassettes are compatible with the rest of the system? Your reference to a Mavic wheel seems to imply it's the former.

Yes. If a Shimano 8sp cassette fits this freehub, a 9sp Shimano/SRAM cassette will fit with no spacers.
