A bike and Porsche

yes the roads are awful.

City of Edinburgh Council have a very special roads maintenance programme. All potholes, broken manholes, detritus, salt and gravel are carefully 'stored' in bright red cycle lanes until they can be replaced, usually on a highly-efficient 15 to 20-year cycle.
At these times, the cycle lanes are closed, and normal traffic lanes reduced to around 6'6", resulting in cyclists getting hit.

The benefit is that the hit cyclists end up in the 'storage zone' and will be replaced in another 15 years.
