In 'real' life, without engines, the only (safest) way to land is with plenty of airspeed.
Airspeed is gained by increasing thrust from the engines, (not an option to Sturmey Archer III) or swapping altitude for speed.
That means nose down, increase airspeed, pick a point on the ground/river, check if it is moving away from you, (undershoot) or towards you (overshoot). The point that is static in your view is approximately (final glide aside) where you will end up. As the ground rushes up towards you, pull back on the controls, and swap some of the airspeed for lift, and flare out the landing.
Simple to do with a parachute/paraglider/glider/light aircraft.
A little more 'fraught' with 300 people behind you screaming like banshees.
