It’s the feeling of not having control, and indeed not knowing what to control, that makes it so scary and the thought of loosening my white knuckle grip of the drops was absolutely the last thing on my mind. If it happens again, and I’ll do everything in my power to make sure it doesn’t, knee into the crossbar will be the first resort if I can’t reach the brake.

In retrospect, and albeit it didn’t seem so at the time, the entire incident probably didn’t last more than two or three seconds, and as soon as I managed to slow my speed, by not much more than 1 mph, the wobble cut out instantly.

I’ve reached higher speeds on that bike without any problem and the parameters required to induce the ‘shimmy’ do seem to be quite narrow, so it’s certainly not going to put me off. Just another one to mark down to experience!

Touch wood, I've only had similar IIRC in the rear wheel, the front wheel would be scary indeed  I've put my wobbles down to a combination of the tyre, greasy surface and my weight distribution at the time, doesn't sound like it was any of them in your case.

I don't remember having a speed wobble on a pedal cycle but I have vivid memories of one at 60-65mph on a Triumph 500 motorbike, a 5TA, a guaranteed constipation cure.

dave, don't some motorbikes have dampers on the bars to stop shimmy?

They used to, I haven't ridden a motorbike for over thirty years so I can't comment on modern bikes, the Triumph had a big shiny knob in the middle of the handlebars to adjust the damping, no good to man or beast once the wobble has set in.

Some M/cycles still need steering dampers from time to time.
