Would this type be acceptable? My parents have one that I suspect to be the only cheese grater they have ever owned, making it 44 years old.

I have one of those as well, i inherited from my Mum, I believe she got it as a Wedding present in 1957.

If anyone has any slicing requirements we appear to have found ourselves with a spare mandolin...

I had one rather like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kitchen-C...pt=UK_Kitchen_Accessories&hash=item540ff72250
but not necessarily that very one. It got lost somewhere along the way, and I've now got much the same in plastic (metal blades). Works OK. The standard box time is hard to beat though

we have 2 of these. both orange plastic moulinex one was my MILs that she stopped using when she got told to stop eating cheese. the other i nicked from my dad as he didn't use it and used the traditional sheet steel one.

my favourite was the one my mum used which was round and had different sections with different grater patterns made a cheesy smile when you grated . skinned my knuckles a few times as a kid
