My aunt was very religious and did some work on researching her family history. She was most embarrassed to find her great grandfather ran a brothel in Dudley and never talked again about that side of the family history.
nothing to be ashamed of.Giving out soup to the needy is very noble,i would have been proud.

Just knowing where I came from. Also some of the things in my background that were never discussed or explained to me

Yep my Grandfather was an odd one, very, very Victorian and treated my Dad poorly, but after Dad was gone I found his service record and followed it up. It was nothing like we had been lead to believe. He had a terrible time at the Somme front and then as a POW and then after the war with having been starved.

Choice of footwear aside, you could have been tucking into laverbread, cockles and Tomos Watkin beer in Swansea :hungry:

I was brought up eating larva bread and hating it.
Went foraging cockles, hooking conger eel and setting deadlines before I was 10.
No electricity, no running water, chemical toilet and a mile to walk to the school bus.
Scholarship meant I left before I was interested in beer.
Then it was Hancock's Barleybrite and Felinfoel. We worked out that there was better alcohol value because of the pricing point.

Says a lot about my subsequent career too

Their brew, called the Reverand James was a excellent beer. Until Brains of Cardiff bought it and closed the brewery down, moving production to their Cardiff site. It never tasted the same again.

You are getting muddled up. It was Buckley's that made Rev James and was bought by Brains. Felinfoel is still going

Well, Brains leaving Caroline Street was the big mistake.
Googled that and found there is now a place called Splott Beach.
What is going on? Splott with a beach?? Who are they trying to kid.

Who else remembers the other reason Caroline Street had a reputation. Apart from being opposite The Philharmonic.
Oh my! I just googled The Philharmonic - it used to be a drinking den, now it seems to think it's a venue.

I grew up drinking Brains SA or occasionally Dark, or Deaaark is it's more correctly pronounced. Maybe my taste has changed but modern SA seems a bit of bland brew akin to John Smiths rather the decent pint it was back in the day.

I remember liking Felinfoel back in the day too, and thought it excellent. Not had it for ages so don't know if they've kept it up as a fine pint or if it's turned into borderline keg

Splott had had a beach for years. You get to it from Rover Way just passed the steel works
