Fair enough, what was the actual diagnosis? Given xray doesn't show anything in terms of the extent of soft tissue damage? I've had several injuries (back, legs) that were benign on xray, cleared as ok by A&E but subsequently needed surgery. From my experience, I wouldn't now start to cycle again unless recovered or cleared by a physio / specialist. Just because a bone isn't broken, doesn't mean the injury isn't potentially serious. There have been lots of times over the last 5 years where I wished I'd fractured bones rather than sustained soft tissue injury!

If you feel comfortable doing it, that's your choice

From the range of movement she wasn't concerned that there was any serious damage, but I'll be cautious, especially if any pains don't subside after a few days, or any specific movements cause significant pains. For the moment I'm keeping it moving, though I won't be doing sprints/weights/press-ups, or anything else that puts significant stress on tender tissue.

I'm amazed this doesn't happen more often, the amount of times I'm overtaken by cars going into the wrong lane on blind bends is shocking.

I had to go out a bit later than usual this morning and there was some seriously bad driving, the worst being one who couldn't wait behind me at a pinch point (I was in primary to stop anyone squeezing me) so he/she just casually pulled across to the other side of the central island and drove in the wrong direction for a while with zero chance of coming back across!

Whoops, saw it on twitter and didn't notice, hope those two people are ok. Airbags deploying can write off a car.
I'm pretty sure both would be write-offs even without the airbag issue. I'd guess that both of the car casualties were fine, from how they were straight after.

I'll be back on the bike tomorrow - I went out for a meal tonight, and thought I'd be sensible and take the car - agony to push the gear stick over to 1st & 2nd gear. At least I can ride one-handed, if needs be.

I think the A396 is very poor road , When i came back from Exeter on Saturday i thought about using that road to get to Tiverton. Took the 3181 instead and cut across.

Almost my worst nightmare this, cos if they get a split second to react to the oncoming car they won't even think they'll instinctively cut back across the road and then we're toast.

Did you give any details to anyone? Interesting once it hits the insurance companies.

Police took statements from everyone, including a very clear-headed and helpful local lady who was following the car that was squeezing past me, and seemed to see it all. I was more focused on the car a few inches away from my right leg. I'm lucky it didn't spin to its left on impact.

Could have been so much worse.

Oh, you'll be interested to know that I was asked twice in the hospital whether I was wearing a helmet

I recall the same thing when I had an off. If you have no head injury and say you were wearing a helmet, I suspect it bolsters the case for helmets in their minds - even if it was irrelevant. If you say no I guess you will be given a standard lecture about how many cyclist lives they have seen saved by helmets. I said yes but still got the lecture
