For this year's cycling touring holiday, I've planned a double coast to coast ride. I will be starting from Whitby and cycling a circular route back to Whitby.

The route is briefly as follows. Whitby - Scarborough - Bridlington - York - Ripon - Settle - Morecambe - Arnside - Eskdale - St. Bees - Keswick - Grasmere - Ambleside - Patterdale - Pooley Bridge - Shap - Kirkby Stephen - Mallerstang Common - Hawes - Keld - Tan Hill - Middleton in Teesdale - Langdon Beck - Westgate - Stanhope - Scotch Corner - Scorton - Ingleby Cross - Commondale - Grosmont - Whitby.

It will based on camping, although, I may include a couple of youth hostels along the way. I guess about 500 miles is about right. I need to sort out the month, but hopefully it will be around the May/June time.

I'm still planning a Coast to Coast, but this will be now a week to do it. So having to re-plan the route, I've decided to target the key places of the Coast to Coast walk, but staying on the road or suitable bridle-paths.

I could still do the double, but have decided on a more in-depth ride, taking in Buttermere, Borrowdale and basically a more relaxed ride.

Cheers, Colin.

I'm taking a ATC-K2 cam and should hopefully get some decent footage whilst on route. So, need to stock up on a few 2GB SD cards. Pity, it can't take a 4GB card, although, my Nikon P50 can. But, the ATC-K2 sits quite happily on the bar-end grip.

Extending the ride to hit Hornsea might be worth doing, partly because of the scenery (and Hornsea Pottery's interesting to watch being made) but mainly because the entire road between Fridaythorpe and Wetwang is one huge pothole. It's definitely worth taking a detour from the A166 for that stretch at least.

Been, having a re-think about the double coast to coast and I think I've cracked it.

The route is looking like Sunderland - South Shields - Hadrian's Cycle route (NCN72) - Workington - Keswick - Threlkeld - (NCN6) Kendal - Whitby (W2W)

About 300 miles and in 6 days.

The double coast to coast is still on the cards, the route is still the same, that is the Hadrian's Cycle-Way to St. Bees, then back to Robin Hood's Bay via the Lakes, Pennines, Dales and the Moors. However, I'm going head to York from the route at Danby Wiske, once at York, I will head back to the North York Moors to Danby via the Ron Kitching Challenge route.

I'm camping, so in about another 2 weeks, I will load the gear and get moving. Should be a good route.

Sounds like a great route that mate. There is some lumpy stuff to scale, just remember there's always a reward after a tough climb!

I was coming back from yesterday's NRRC in stamfordham, the climb up Alston Moor was gruelling from the 12mph headwind coupled with the slog of 7 miles gaining 1000+ ft. I hope you don't experience too many elements to mar the ride.

I'm guessing you haven't been to Hornsea for a while? The potteries is no longer there, it's now Freeport shopping village. I've lived around here for 7 years & i think production ceased a few years before then

You've been talking about it since at least 2009 on another forum. Isn't it time you bit the bullet and did it?
Yes, vernon, it's time to bite the bullet. I have a new route plotted, I'm pretty impressed with the route and this is on my blog, I plan to do this next year and should take about 10 days to complete.

10 days? are you walking it now?
what happened to the bike idea?
It sounds a long time, but if it is 500 miles (which would surprise me - I would have guessed about 350-400 miles), then that is not so bad. 50 miles a day sounds reasonable if lowrider wants to explore a bit rather just knocking out the miles as quickly as possible.
