A good commute requires a trial run

I use google maps & street view to give me the first clues. But not very good at working out gradients.

I do too. Today's route was to the same destination but I thought I'd try a different route, which would be more direct. However due to steeper roads, more map looking at junctions etc, I've decided that the previous route was better if I make a slight alteration to avoid the worst of the glass. I guess it's things like that you can't find out until to try the route.

Will be doing a trial run of my route next week. A hilly 11 miles each from Chatham to Maidstone.
