Back in the ions of time I played for the school, so was okish.
Q..........
Does anyone understand all the positions ie mid on, silly mid off etc.
TBH I have never understood them, even when playing.

I used to play for "the rest" at school in the summer

I was known to be OK - compared to everyone else that couldn;t be bothered to do any other summer sports - at bowling and batting
I seem to remember I generally bowled 3 wides in my first over and got 2-3 people out in my second over

we were all rather rubbish so bowling strait normally resulted in hitting the wickets

I do remember Toby (surname removed to protect the innocent) fielding on the far boundary one day
and did not move for the whole innings
and then stayed there for the other team's inning

and this is all well before mobile phones - so he was just standing there
presumably thinking

he ended up as a professor at a University - Computer Science I think which was - obviously given our age - not something we ever did at school!

That graphic is helpful.
As you will see there are only a few main positions to learn. Then it’s just a question of moving in and out a bit.
The easiest way to remember the difference between on side and off side, is on side means bowling on your legs and off side means bowling off your legs.
So all those positions change when you have a left handed batter.

there are 10 fielders plus the bowler though

Yes but wicket keeper and slip are pretty easy to understand without much knowledge.

You only need to know mid on, mid off, point, cover, mid wicket.

Square leg and fine leg are self explanatory.
Gully is just a wider slip,

And Third man is where you hide the no hoper.

After that it’s just deeper, finer, longer, shorter, wider.

My favourite descriptor is Silly, which is again self explanatory to anyone who has ever fielded there.

It’s a mad but wonderfully eccentric game, we even had local rules relating to the large chestnut trees at long on and the other at deep square. That said, you can’t go wrong with a game structured around meals!
