he sits 2m away from me, he lives in the same town as me, we get on famously, he's asked leading questions about riding to work, shoes and pedals, and cycling with a club....

...do I offer to lead him on a ride one weekend?

...do I ask him to come on a social group club run?

...or show him a decent/safe commute route once the evenings get lighter?

...do nothing?

Seriously though, why not just ask him if he'd like to go out for a ride when the weather improves? If it embarrasses you or you fear ridicule you can always dress it up as a joke suggestion.

Tell him it's about time your Cycle to Work bike was upgraded and that he knows it makes sense to have a top-of-the-range one!

If he's about the same age as you, then asking him out for a social ride wouldn't do any harm.

Ha ha - I'm in the same situation. My line manager, who used to do olympic distance and half iron man triathlons, and is like a streak of p*ss wants to go out on the road with me. I keep telling her that we'll go out when the weather improves. I've been saying that for a couple of years. I'm sure we'll get around to it this year...

My advice is, if it feels too contrived, don't do it. If you can draw a line between cycling and work with the person, then go right ahead. Be careful about talking about it in the workplace, in case of colleague's reactions that it might be favouritism...

All I can say is... lucky you! My boss is a Q7 driving, golf playing, Rolex-wearing alpha male with a very loud voice who shakes your hand with his palm downwards. He would NEVER be seen dead riding a bicycle and yesterday when I told him I wanted to be in South Africa in March to ride the Cape Argus again he said he thought I was mad.

yeah he's has a road going mtb for a few years and regularly rides with a mate or two on a sunday, 30km max.

I would offer to take him out on a ride, and leave the suggestion with him. The ball is in his court. If he is really interested he will take you up on the offer. If you do go out, try, however hard it is not to talk about work.
