I prefer the lane route myself (NCN 41 to the bridge, then St Briavels/Bream/Parkend/Soudley/Littledean/Northwood Green/Tibberton/Highnam), but neither the A38 nor the A48 are bad, though it may be best to avoid the Gloucester area during rush hour.

Approaching Gloucester on the A38, take the first exit off the dual and go through Quedgeley to the lights at the other end of the dual. There's roadside cycle track for all of the SW bypass and A40 from these lights to just after the A40/A48 roundabout. The stretch from the Hempsted roundabout to just before the lights by the docks is unreconstructed footway - a bit bumpy and prone to get cars parked on it, but the rest is good.

Did it today. 67 miles, mostly sunny, bit of a headwind between Gloucester and Chepstow, but a nice day out and my longest so far this year!
:bicycle:
Thanks to all who gave me advice - had no probs on the A48 (well, the odd numpty passing too close, but no more than on most other roads).
Tea and an egg bap just north of Westbury, tea and cake in Chepstow :hungry:

And I do like cycling over the suspension bridge!

There was a man in a maintenance van, who slowed right down and pulled over when I went past. Otherwise the bridge was deserted (well, the cyclepath part anyway!).

What about the wind, I was really struggling with it today!
