In my local paper this week it was reported that the Council has made 1 million pounds from motorists getting nabbed on CCTV being naughty by going into bus lanes...its a £60 penalty but if you pay within 14 days its reduced to £30...councils mantra is cars are impeding flow of traffic blah blah blah...I was a guilty party a few months ago a photo in my post highlighting my heinous crime...I remember the day quite clearly...I did stray into the bus lane but just a yard or few from the official cut in bit and in way did I delay any traffic flow...that sucks...I paid up reluctantly...if councils want the bus lanes kept clear why don't they erect giant signs to say £60 fines if you go into a precious bus lanes...s'pose that cash cow would disappear pretty quick and they don't want that....that's my rant for the year over...phew!

It's quite clear that bus lanes are not intended for cars so any infringement that incurs a penalty has no defence so I'd not whinge. I copped for a fine last year. Fair cop. I was in the wrong even if like you it was for a few yards. Unlike you I paid up without any feeling of resentment.

Just south of Bury there's a "commuting hours" bus lane, which suddenly becomes an "all hours" bus lane for a few yards. You need to be very alert to spot the change. And guess what? Bury Council has a little white car with a big camera on its roof that sits there all day photographing the idiots who get caught. It's the most blatant money-making scam I've seen.

Here in York, one of the bridges has been closed to all but buses, taxis and cyclists during certain day time hours. There's a huge uproar from all the drivers who've failed to see any of the signs.

Personally I don't think it's all that good an idea, the bridge restriction, but it's fun reading all the outrage in the Press.

The most annoying thing about that bridge, when I'm trying to walk to the station, is all the bloody tourists ambling along three abreast at 1mph, photographing random crap.

Sorry but not much sympathy here, from an ex HGV driver who used to have to negotiate Aberdeen several days a week. Going to the airport at lunch time was usually ok, but the return at 5pm? :cursing:. I still have nightmares about that 2 mile queue from Dyce to the Haudagain roundabout. Queue jumpers in cars using the bus lane were a pain, and some of them thought that a 44 tonne lorry would let them cut in before the roundabout :stop:.

Jeez, that's REALLY unfair Herbie. REALLY unfair on YOU. Those Councillors are probably pouring Patron for hookers using your hard-earned, RIGHT NOW. Perhaps if they called them something more obvious, like BUS LANES (i.e lanes for actual buses) and erected blue signs showing the the hours over which the lane is restricted then you wouldn't have fallen for this blatant scam. You only used the lane because of all those selfish b*****ds in front of you in the queue, right?

"Aberdeen City Council rakes in £1m from fining law breakers" sounds far more accurate to me.

Looks fairly easy to understand. If in doubt then do not go in it!
I do worry that there are so many drivers going about and not seeing all the huge signs and clear markings.
Given how hard council tax hits many people it seems a rather better way of collecting revenue.

Noel Edmonds got caught driving his own taxi cab in bus lanes which he bought for the purpose. So perhaps the death penalty for that offence.

I got a £60 fine for urinating in the street. When Oh when will this war on al fresco sprinklers end, it's nothing more than a tax on honest hard-working open-air pissers.

Don't know if you're taking the p*ss or not, but I CAN sympathise with people who get "caught out" without a toilet to be seen for miles as most public facilities appear to have been closed down (or are well hidden from non locals). I happen to have some bladder issues, and when you've got to go, you've got to go.....

"BUS lane fines have made Aberdeen City Council more than £350,000 since they were introduced six months ago"

Maybe you should read a different paper.

I never believe anything the Evening Express reports....their senior sister paper the Press and Journal is more believable IMHO it was it that said a figure of 1 million.....anyway who believes anything whatever rag prints these days?

Anyone remember the Manchester bollards scandal

Big fully lit flashing signs beside the bollards, yet still the muppets tried to get through.

Then S@fespeed and the Association of Bad Drivers started bleating about how the City Council was trying to kill drivers!
