Hi!

I was going to buy an Abus CityChain X-Plus 1060. I'm sick of U-locks, this seems as strong as a U-Lock can be, but with the extra flexibility which is sometimes all you need when that pole is just a bit too wide or the lock is just a bit too short. I also like the fact that you can wrap it around the seat post, which I find much greater than your typical U-lock bracket attachment, with the lock rattling all the time and damaging your frame. The disadvantages seem to be mainly its superior weight (don't really mind for commuting), but mostly, its much greater price.

Which brings me to my question: would any one of you have an opinion on whether the Abus CityChain X-Plus 1010 is equally worth it? Main difference I can see is that the links are 9mm wide instead of 10mm, but they're sold for 45 quids, which is a very significant saving...

Any opinions?

What's the sold secure rating? I'd only buy if gold. Bike radar has reasonable reviews of locks

Both are Gold, with a top score of 15. I wouldn't buy anything below that, but even at that point, there can be some significant differences between different locks. More importantly, there can be differences other than related to security between those two locks. The 1060 gets very good reviews, but reviews for the 1010 are rather hard to find, so I was hoping to find feedback here. I'm also getting the feeling that the 1060 is kind of overkill for a bicycle (more for motobikes), but again, it's just a feeling.

On a related note, would you have any other suggestion for a reliable U-lock alternative?

I use a D lock sorry

If you look at Bike Radar, they have a review of a chain and padlock that they raved about, gave 5 starts. From a specialist lock site, can't remember which sorry. I expect someone will know though

10mm chain link width is too small, a chain should be at least 16mm to prevent hand cropping, try Almax they sell excellent chains.

Do you honestly believe that 10mm links would be so weak? What size should a bolt cropper be to cut through that? I've heard of Almax chains, but in fairness I believe they're more oriented to motorcycles. Would you suggest I should stick with U-locks?

Yes, hand bolt croppers would only take seconds to cut through 10mm links. I have two Almax chains, one at work and one at home, they are excellent, I also have Abus 54X D(U) locks, neither prevent my bikes being stolen just make it more difficult and time consuming.
If you need portable security then good D locks it has to be, a decent chain will be too heavy.
