FFS I can't believe all this discussion about a website for sad social inadequates who can't get off their chairs and go out and meet neighbours and friends.
That's actually a better characterisation of forums like this very Cycle Chat than it is of Facebook, which (at least in my experience) is used exactly for the purpose of staying in touch with real-life friends and neighbours.

+1

Although I would express not this forum specifically, these sorts of sites do help the socially inept to create an alter ego to which they can apend a bunch of cyber pals and get away with it easier than on sites like Facebook where for the most part you dont have strangers pestering you and you control what people know about you.

Dont get me wrong you obviously get the sad social inadequates on every networking site and community forum. Facebook just has a few more as the total number of people using it is a little higher than most others.

Whether you love or hate facebook you have to respect/appreciate it for what it is and realise it is changing the way we spend time and do business online. Its nothing new, I admit that, but it has brought certain concepts and routines to the mainstream.

I don't suppose I really have a problem with facebook if people enjoy it then good on them.I just felt I didn't want to join and 'pretend' I had friends of total strangers.

Im a bit saddened that someone can nick my very uncommon name and use it on a site like this and I can't seem to stop them.Possibly if there is someone who really want's to get in contact with me from my past I hope they will not encounter this comedian imposter.

If its a true person, how has he stolen your name? How do you know that it wasnt his name, and you just didnt know about him? He could also be older, meaning that you stole his name.
It could well be, ofcourse, that someone is doing it for a laugh.
Im going to copy-right my name i think, and anyone else that has it has stolen it!!

I have had it pointed out to me recently that someone has set up an imposter account of my natural name which isn't a common name and of which I am unaware of anyone in London having the same name as me,where this person claims to come from.As some of this persons 'friends' are from a messageboard website of which I frequent then I suspect the guilty party must be from the same messageboard.

I have had a word with Facebook about this but have basically got nowhere.

Can I copyright my name and then 'force' facebook to back down.(It is an unusual name of which I used to hate)It was the butt of jokes on this certain messageboard but as I didn't really bite for once it soet of died out apart from the fact of this facebook imposter.

I think the Facebook people are a bunch of )'s for allowing this to happen.

Has anyone got any tips and advice?

Don't be ridiculous, course you can't "copyright" your name.
What an arrogant preposterance.
What makes you think you have any more right to copyright your name than if you were, say, called "John Smith" or "Joe Bloggs"?

In fact, the above aside - if you genuinely suspect that he is doing it just to nick your friends or annoy you - the symptom of that problem would be that any given (potential) friend has a 50/50 chance of finding you and a 50/50 chance of finding the impostor.
Well, you may not be able to solve the problem but you can treat the symptom - simply set up 99 more accounts with your name so they only have a 1% chance of finding him, and a 99% chance of finding you.

Well the worst that will happen is they will search for your name and get 2 results, you and the imposter. If they add them not you then it should not take too long for them to realise its not the right 'you' and go back to the drawing board.

If you have an up to date clear pic of you on the profile there should not be many mistakes.

My office is terrible for Facebook hijackings. I left my computer unlocked with facebook open once during lunch, when I returned I had divorced my wife and married a man called Aiden and had a bunch of rather explicit wall posts from him and equally raunchy replys from me! gits!

But I wouldnt worry, pretending to be someone on Facebook doesnt really last long, you could always add them yourself to investigae, he may be genuine and even having a similar conversation on a hiking forum about you being an imposter to him!

Ha ha this is a better idea than adding him as a friend! what about letting us all set up accounts for you so your name is suddently not as uncommon and you dont feel so wronged!

Hackbike is right to be miffed.
Imagine you're called (e.g.) Harvey Blenkinsop-Flange McHiggins III.
You've never heard of anyone else with the same name.
Someone sets up an account of F'book with that name.
People think it's you.
The mystery person appears to be a complete @rse.
People think you're an @rse (or worse).

I'd be miffed, livid, angry, annoyed too.

Hackbike... on the Help pages (under safety) it points out that using a fake name is a violation of F'book terms of use. If they don't handle your complaint properly, you can complain to these folk. They can only tell F'book off, though, not deal specifically with the content. Apologies if you already know this.
