Advice on how to repair?

More a south eastern thing, I think. Parts of the southwest have slimy water like up norf.

IIRC WsM is right on the border between hard and soft water supplies and different parts of the town have rather different water hardness, depending whether they get water from the Mendips (soft) or the levels (hard).

I should have made it clear in my original post that due to the age of the softener, the part in question is sadly no longer available from any of the sources that I've investigated.

Self vulcanizing tape may be a better bet than self amalgamating, but the only long-term fix that comes to mind is 3D scanning and printing if you know anyone with the kit. Not cheap, though.

Wouldn't that scan the hole too?

Thanks, but sadly that's from a newer model and I can't see how it could be made to work with mine.

That's interesting.

When I first tried to devise a repair, I racked my brains trying to think of something liquidy that I could dip the body of the valve into (after first masking off the inlet) and which would then solidify/harden around it (maybe repeating several times).

I couldn't think of anything suitable, but hot-melt glue sounds like it might fit the bill, thanks for the suggestion.

Update: It took a couple of applications, but I'm pleased to report that the hot glue gun did the trick !
