Due to a change in employment and requirements of the new company I am being forced to buy a new car.
I am replacing a well used VW Passat Estate which has been fantastic. It has taken everything that my children, my bikes, my camping gear, my dogs and my need of lugging stuff around (butler sink and worktop collected from Leicester, welsh dresser collected from Hull, 8 guitars, 3 amps and a drum kit from Glasgow, a concrete coal bunker delivered to Doncaster to name but a few- all from or to South Essex) and it has never missed a beat. Always starts first turn of the key and has actually been the best car I have ever owned - which may say more about the previous cars I have had than I would otherwise let on.
I am thinking of replacing it with a Skoda Superb Estate and would like to know anyone's experience with the Skoda. Will it be as good a car as my Passat has been for the last 8 years that I have owned it and the 6 years the previous keeper had it for to (yes 14 years old and only 2 owners).
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Can't help you with the new car choice but I also have a similar conundrum. 2005yr B5.5 Passat 1.9tdi auto, we are the second owners. Owned since 2010 and is brilliant. Mrs want's to replace and I am not keen to let it go because of the horror stories about more modern cars
Even just getting another Passat isn't the easy choice it would seem (e-brake, timing belt gears and DSG problems rumoured to be just the obvious pitfalls)
Good luck with your choice, I suspect I will end up with a 13 or 14 plate Passat or CC

I have a Skoda Fabia VRS estate, fantastic green car

The Superb is meant to be enormous inside, like the tardis. Get a test drive, see what you think?

As above there's probably a VW / Audi / seat on the same floor pan?

You can always get a Friday car but buying new, you'd get the 3 yr warranty

I doubt there'll be an Audi on the same price plan though
The last couple of times I've been looking for a new motor looked at Skoda, but they now seem more expensive than Ford & Vauxhall similar models, which says lots about the reputation of Skoda now

Indeed. And yes Audis are silly money. An A6 estate must be a similar size to the Superb (a daft name)

I'd change your missus.
I may have to occasionally pander to her superficial appearance requirements (she wants to change cars for something that looks 'a bit newer') but she has other, redeeming qualities that make her irreplaceable

Dave. Not wanting to dampen your enthusiasm for a new job but before you invest a considerable sum in a new car to get the job, are you sure it is a good move? I always have a suspicion in cases like this that the company is run on a shoestring and keeping you gainfully employed is at the bottom of their priorities. They have invested nothing in your employment and should the work dry up can drop you in an instant without incurring any financial burden from having to pay for surplus vehicles or other equipment you may also be providing. If that happened would you still be able to pay for the car?

Also, what are the rules regarding the car? Does it have to be new or can you buy something 6-12 months old. If nearly new is allowed then you could save yourself a good family holiday amount of cash and still be covered by at least 2yrs of the common 3yr car warranty.

You will love it !!! I worked for Skoda when the Mk-1 Superb was launched and it was a hit due to its interior size, spec and better value. When VW let them build an estate version then the gloves were off and it has become one of the best cars in that range even beating a Merc E-class estate ! They were based on the Chinese Passat platform which had more length than the European version hence the massive legroom in the rear......Not sure why the Chinese market required a bigger car though
Skoda used the Superb name as it was their flagship car in the 1930's and again put the likes of a certain brand with a Silver lady up front to shame
Go for the L&K version if funds allow, you will want to live in it !
As for the equivalent Audi or VW......there are loads of them about and why not stand out from the crowd with a Superb ??

My neighbour recently bought one and he's delighted with it, and he was brand loyal to SAAB for many years so any replacement for his treasured estate had a lot to live up to.
Other neighbour has large extended family who are all taxi drivers (8 of them) and every one has a Skoda Superb. They are very reliable and solidly built.

Like @vickster I've got the Fabia estate (though only a Greenline) and I'm very impressed with it over the five years I've had it. I'm thinking of changing in the next year or so and have been coveting a petrol Superb estate. It's quite a bit dearer so if my budget doesn't allow it I'll maybe go for the Octavia or just another Fabia. Whatever I get it'll definitely be a Skoda.

I like to tease mine by suggesting that when my vast CRT Sony Trinitron, which she finds 'embarrassing', dies, I'll buy another!

Can't comment on the Superb but we traded in Mrs Afnugs Audi A1 2.0L flying mahine for a Fabia Estate, I am very impressed with build performance and room (its a 1.2 petrol as she does a lot of short trips) that my next motor will probabley be a Yeti or Octavia Estate.
