Advice please - should I offer?

They only gave you half a days training on a new machine? Its their fault then, not to get at you but people learn at different rates. The guy training you should have at least taught you for half a day then stayed around to watch you use the machine. He could then have asked you questions about what your doing etc.

I wouldn't have like to get just half a days training to use a chainsaw. It could cost money and lives. It is your companies fault.

What happened to the guy who backed a bus into his works garaged and totalled the hole building?

Yep, we had a crash course for half a day and had it calibrated to a certain ratio. The material we're using was then reformulated and it was while recalibrating it to the new ratio I made the cock up.

We were shown the calibration technique and I undid too many bolts .

I think the training was entirely adequate, a "crash" course

No need to pay, we all make mistakes and companies (should) take out insurance or maintenance contracts to cover such eventualities.

My dad used to work for BA, and one of the fork lift operators managed to pierce the side of an almost complete aircraft.....very expensive, as not only does the skin have to be repaired, the damage goes down on a consessions list, wich reduces the overall sale price of the aircraft (most aircraft have lots of consessions as 'bits' don't always fit as the plans say......)...

Mistakes happen and this is something you're doing as part of your job, not out of free choice in your own time. I've busted lots of things, it happens.

We once dropped a brand new printing machine off of a forklift! It was too high, the forks were too short and the floor too slippy. After a big bounce it came to rest upside down! Manufacturer managed to get it working, although it was never right, and I was later told that if it had been dead the company might have gone bust.

I work for myself and if I make a mistake and it costs me money I don't offer to pay. I pretend it was someone else.

I still end up paying of course, it's just that I don't worry about it.

Thanks again all, just spent most of the day with the project manager who also happens to be my line manager and didn't mention it - you talked me out of it.

He does know I'm sorry and I did flag up the problem straight away. That'll do for him so it's good enough for me.

ps. the machine doesn't do what we want it to and needs taking away and shooting and reconfigurating to our needs. We're getting better results with a drill and bucket
