Hi All.....

I've been doing a lot of reading and not a lot of posting on here for a few months and finally i've started cycling to work !!! I used to commute (for about 3 weeks) about 4 years ago and I have always wanted to start again.

After a lot of thought I decided that the fact that I need to drop my kids off at my in laws didnt have to mean I couldnt cycle to work. So I reclaimed my old GT hard tail moutain bike from my brother, fixed it up and left it in my in laws garage, got a key cut and now I drive the kids down, park up and cycle the 3 miles from their house to my work.

BENEITS..... It now takes me 15 mins to get from their house to my work....a car journey that otherwise took me 40 mins and I feel great when I get to work.

Drawbacks..... None whatsoever....

Prior to starting I did think that there was a lot of chat on here about bad things that had happened or nearly happened to other cyclists and I put it down to the fact that there must be a high number of people that were prone to sharing bad experiences on here...................now I realise that it is just a hazard of cycling at rush hour.....................

Day one....aprox 3 mins into my first commute.....a silver BMW 3 series estate reverses off his drive without looking and nearly takes me out!!! Day two a white seat Ibiza overtakes me leaving a full 1cm passig distance, nearly taking me out.....day three a nice lady in a silver Honda Civic wacks the indicator on and swings out into my path without a good look and again nearly takes me out and on the same day a red nissan micra suddenly decides that slamming on the brakes is ok as long as he can stick on the hazzards.....not realising that I was nearly the cyclist in a car sandwich as the guy behind me struglled to stop!!

When you stop an look back you think......wtf.....but if you ask me, 'will I be back on the mean streets of Glasgow east next week?'' the answer is.... hell yeah.......wouldnt miss it for the world....the positives well out weigh the negatives!!!

Thanks to one and all...

Nice one BC...
Maybe you've started badly, not you, but your experiences. Ive been commuting for years and we all have our 'incidents' that seem to come in clumps. Then of course, you'll have incident free commutes, hopefully for months on end. My incidents seem very few and far between right now, hopefully it'll stay that way.
Good on ya anyway, like you say, the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Welcome to the fold mate. Commuting by bike's great isn't it? Okay, you've had a couple of 'moments' but that doesn't seem to have put you off. You've chosen a great time to start as it's just a couple of days to the 1st day of Spring. I would suggest that you put a little by each week to get some good kit for later in the year, although I would think Mother Nature has a few things in store for us before the weather really perks up. You'll find plenty of good advice on cycling gear here I can assure you.
