Thanks all. The hill comes towards the end of the commute (circa 1 hour), so I may not always be as mentally sharp by that point

I'm a bit confused by what your definitions of higher and lower gears might be. Lower means pedalling faster for a given speed.

If it's a long commute i always used to factor in puncture time; Can I stop to repair one and still get to work on time?

As for which gear I'm in... I don't like pushing too hard and I don't like spinning. I'm always changing gear and barely even think about it.

Just sounds like you working too hard for your current fitness. Things will catch up and it will suddenly just feel routine and straight forward. Commutes do not need much thought, as they become regular and familiar.
