I bet the Retriever started it...bad asses them..
ill take a stab at dog off lead...cyclist has to avoid dog...owner acts like his child is in danger..
cyclist goes into =%€_÷ you peanut mode..owner of dog realises it may be a good idea to get a lead for his uncontrolled child..

Pedestrians have a right to be anywhere on that pavement. As the vulnerable user. The cyclist should slow down. Stay back, and pass only when safe when they can leave enough room to avoid a potential hazard.

After all, that is what is said when it's car vs bicycle on a road. Yet bicycle vs pedestrian on shared paths, a lot seem to expect the bicycle to still have right of way as it's a "cycle path"

Motorists don't drag along dogs on unreasonably long and dangerous dog leads. Sharing is a two-way process: if a path is supposed to be a "shared" one, then pedestrians as well as cyclist need to make an effort to share it. Walking on one side of a path with your dog on the other, and a dog lead between the two of you, is not sharing.

My post may have been exaggerated a bit for the sake of humour (well in my head). But the point is still true.

Battering a guy and his dog because his dog was in the way. Is no different than a van driver battering a cyclist because he was in the middle of his lane instead of "sharing" it.

When threads like this come up, they tend to drift towards "dogs should be under control". But the argument isn't too different to "cyclists should be in the cycle path". It borders on victim blaming.

While the papers will report this as "cyclist" doing this. It is no more than a bully on a bike. Would he have done the same thing if the walker was a well built mid 20s guy?

I believe that amongst younger cyclists, there is a growing trend of entitlement. The attitude may have come out of a necessity to not get squashed by cars. But it is often misdirected.

Try walking on a road against on coming traffic (as you should do) when footpaths are extremely busy. And see what reaction you get from cyclists trying to use that area. I have personally seen a trend towards a certain age and gender group that seem to have an "issue" with it.

Personally when out on a bike, if it's a shared footpath, or down the canal tow path. In my head, this is primarily a pedestrianised area. As such, I give them right of way in my head. On the road you're traffic. Pedestrianised area, you're traffic still. No different in my mind to driving a car through a pedestrianised area, they should be given space.

Only one side of the story.

Ive kicked a dog before and shouted lots of abuse at its owner, which makes me sound like a monster...

....however what preceeded this was me riding along slowly (coming up to a gate so was virtually at a stop), dog chasing over off his lead and barking, owner saying something like he's harmless just as the dog has a bite of my ankle, drawing blood and looked like it was going in for another bite that i kicked out. But if only half the story is told then im just a cycling yob going around kicking dogs and threatening those taking them for a walk!

Once is self defence

Repeated kicking of the dog, then repeatedly punching the owner. Then cycling off is not.

you never had a dog go for you or even worse your 4 yr old 1st born. one kick is rarely enough, as they keep coming back . chihuahuas are evil little fookers too for their size. she still doesn't like dogs , in fact most animals , based on that experience.

I wasn't proud of what i did but keep your dogs on a lead if there are other people, or as per the countryfile and one show prog last night , other animals about.

I think you have skipped the most important rules about sharing a road, that is "don't punch other path users and kick their pets"
